Terry says - "One of my LinkedIn contacts, posted this:

“Yesterday one of my boys said “£5 isn’t a lot of money dad”.  I decided to set them a challenge to show them the value of £5.  We went to our local supermarket, and I tasked them with filling a basket with food without spending over a fiver, the food had to be non perishable so we could donate it to a local food bank.   As we went round the boys added up the cost of the food, made decisions on what would be good and bad for the food bank, and the total was £5.04  Tomorrow the food will be dropped off at the food bank, and my boys have had some education on the value of money and how lucky they are"

There are thousands of families that rely on food banks weekly, so why not join us in the #fiverfoodbankchallenge?”

The idea is that each child goes to the supermarket with a parent, chooses £5 worth of items and brings them to church with the receipt. The £5 is then reimbursed and all the groceries are collected together and delivered to the food bank.

Good items at this time of the year would be tins of fruit, meat, fish and rice pudding.
Toiletries such as toothpaste/brushes, shampoo and shower gel also always good to include.

Gateshead foodbank latest requests:

COFFEE, FRUIT - TINNED, FRUIT JUICE - LONG LIFE, MILK - LONG LIFE, PASTA SAUCE, SAUCES (TOMATO AND BROWN)
SPONGE PUDDINGS

They tend to always have enough pasta, baked beans, sanitary products and teabags so avoid those items if you can.

And although this is aimed at the kids, the grown ups are welcome to take part too!
